A Touch of Sin

10/6/2013

Picture
A Touch of Sin is four stories that intersect each other to tell the stories of desperate people in desperate times in modern day China.
Strangely reminiscent of Iranian film The Circle (2000), director Jia Zhangke takes us to a mining town where a corrupt village chief is swindling the workers' money. One man takes a stand and murder and mayhem ensue. A young man robs and murders to support his family; a young woman murders to escape her downward spiral; and a young couple get caught in an escapable quagmire of desperation. Betrayal, revenge, and consequences are the themes of all four stories. Jia gives us an intimate look at the lengths that people will go to and the breaking points that determine the rest of their lives: here lies the touch of sin.
