If there was ever a case of being in the right place at the right time, it is this.
Amateur historian turned director, John Maloof, finds himself at an auction one day bidding on a box of old negatives he thinks will yield something interesting he might use down the road. What he unearths is a treasure chest of photos of a woman who has rapidly become known as one of the greatest 20th century photographers: Vivian Maier.
Maloof originally bought only a few of the boxes from the storage unit auction but when he discovered what he had, he searched out the other buyers and purchased their boxes as well. From their he pieced together the life of the otherwise unknown Vivian Maier, and began to explore the possibility of showing some of her work. In 2007 he posted a few of her photos online and they immediately went viral. The rest is history. This is one of those films that remind us of possibility, hope, and the potential endless treasure troves of artistry still yet to be found. Remember when that student found that original previously unknown Mozart piece on a university book shelf?
