This film attempts to shed light on the works of controversial 20th century painter, Max Beckmann, focusing on Beckmann's famous triptychs. Director Michael Trabitzsch talks with a number of art curators who share their theories about Beckmann's works but whom often contradict one another with different interpretations of colour, objects, and positioning on the canvas, giving no more clarity to the work than the viewer's own interpretation.

Beckmann is quoted as claiming the works his own, “sloughed off skin,” and “a game of hiding oneself” so it isn't entirely unexpected that Trabitzsch would have difficulty nailing down meaning.

The film comes off a more like a tour through a gallery with more questions than answers, than an actual insight to the artist. This film wasn't at all satisfying and in fact was a bit of a departure from what you might expect it to deliver.
