Vancouver's Le Parisien hosted an evening of fine wine and good food as an introduction to Georges DuBeouf's new wine, Beaujolais Nouveau.
Beaujolais Nouveau is a delicious red wine that boasts a bold and sensuous flavour that is also soft and generous, with a fresh aroma of the grapevine.
Beaujolais Nouveau has a very short maceration time of three to five days before the fermentation and pressing begin. This allows for a very low tannin wine with a fruity aroma and a bright and transparent red colour. It should be served between 14 and 16 degrees celsius.
The wine is wonderfully suited to many dishes, and tonight Le Parisien owner John Blakeley, owner of Kitsilano’s multi-award-winning Bistro Pastis, coupled it with a host of savoury food that did not disappoint.

First up was the appetizer: Vol Au Vent D'escargot, sauteed escargot and button mushrooms with truffled cream sauce. This succulent dish was smooth and rich, and deliciously offset by a green salad with a light vinaigrette. The beaujolais seemed to bring out the flavour of the escargot and enhance the taste.
Next up was Civet De Canard, braised duck in red wine, Vichy carrots, shaved brussel sprouts, with vanilla sunchoke purée. The duck fairly fell from the bone and the vegetables each had their own unique and delicious flavour. Plenty of bread was used to rescue every morsel of food from the plates, and the guests exchanged in agreement, the perfection of the meal and it's coupling with the new wine.
Lastly, we were treated to a Chili Infused Chocolate Torte with raspberry gastrique. This last coupling was by far the best. The chili and deep chocolate blended with the beaujolais, both complimenting each other in the finest way.
All in all, it felt like we were tasting several different wines throughout the evening. The beaujolais was a chameleon of such pleasant surprise.
Georges DuBeouf's Beaujolais Nouveau is most definitely worth the trip to your local wine merchant, and more than worth the reasonable price.
